Hi Nadia,
Thanks for joining us for a chat!
As its National Apprenticeship Week, we thought it would be great time to sit down with you for a chat and find out more about you and your history with apprenticeships!
Can you tell us a bit about your background before joining The ITP?
Sure! After finishing school, I wasn’t sure where I saw myself professionally, so I decided against the traditional educational route and chose apprenticeships instead.
My first apprenticeship was in Early Years Education, where I earned a qualification while gaining hands-on experience with children. I loved supporting their development and making an impact on their lives. I then completed a second apprenticeship in hairdressing! I enjoyed helping clients feel confident while gaining qualifications in the beauty industry.
Next, I transitioned to working as a Receptionist at a Solicitors’ firm. This role allowed me to develop administrative skills, manage client relationships, and gain experience in a professional office environment.
Then I found the ITP!
Did you always have an interest in telecommunications or customer service, or was this a new direction for you?
I wish I could say I’ve always been tech-savvy, but if you asked my team, they’d probably tell you a different story!
While I’ve always had a strong interest in the tech industry, I never felt like I had the qualifications or experience. Completing my apprenticeship helped me realise that many of the skills I had gained, like communication, problem-solving, and adapting to new environments, were just as valuable in the tech world.
What motivated you to apply for an apprenticeship at The ITP?
While I enjoyed my role as a Receptionist, I wanted to find a role where I could gain a more long-term career. What really stood out to me was the opportunity and encouragement for flexible working and how supportive The ITP were for CPD. As a young Mum, it was important to find a company that supports work-life balance whilst allowing me to grow through training and learning opportunities.
How did you feel about combining practical experience with structured learning?
As we know, many employers emphasise the need for qualifications and/or prior experience. This is where apprenticeships come in. You're not just learning the theory behind your chosen field but also developing the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the industry.
How have you found the apprenticeship process so far?
The process was smooth and although I had a change in coaches, they both gave me great support and advice.
Were there any challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them?
The main challenge was believing I could actually succeed and pass my apprenticeship. There were times when self-doubt crept in, and I questioned if I was capable. My coach was there to remind me of my strengths and past successes. She was a great sense of support and towards my EPA, I felt confident in my skills and was able to complete my apprenticeship.
What has been the most rewarding part of the apprenticeship for you?
One of the most rewarding parts of completing my apprenticeship has been the opportunity to work with current apprentices going through their own courses. I’m able to relate to the challenges they face because I’ve been in their shoes and experienced the same doubts.
It’s incredibly rewarding to see them gain confidence and ultimately, succeed. Being part of their journey and knowing I can help ease their struggles feels like the ultimate reward for everything I’ve gone through myself.
What skills have you learned during your apprenticeship?
Through my apprenticeship, I gained an understanding of the emotions that customers experience throughout their journey, and how to navigate challenging situations. Understanding the customer journey helped me anticipate customer needs and respond appropriately, whether by offering reassurance, clarifying information, or showing empathy.
How has this helped you in your role at The ITP?
This skill has been valuable in my role, especially when recruiting apprentices. I now know how to better communicate with potential candidates, ensuring they feel understood and supported throughout the recruitment process. I can anticipate their concerns, whether it’s about the apprenticeship requirements, the commitment involved, or any doubts they might have about their abilities and address them thoughtfully.
You’ve recently completed your apprenticeship and gained a distinction, Congratulations! A fantastic achievement! And your 3rd apprenticeship! What are your plans now that you have completed?
I would love to do another apprenticeship, preferably in Project Management. I feel that completing my Customer Service apprenticeship has helped me establish a career path and where I’d like to see myself in the future.
Do you feel the apprenticeship has opened doors for you that you might not have considered before?
This apprenticeship not only gave me the confidence to interact with both internal and external clients, but it’s also introduced me to areas like project management that I now see as an exciting future path. It’s also given me the confidence to take on more responsibility, knowing that I have the skills to manage projects successfully.
Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others?
Absolutely! While the traditional educational route may work for some people, having the ability to learn in a more practical setting may be better for others. Apprenticeships helped me decide my career path with the flexibility of self-study.
Why do you think apprenticeships are a good option for those starting their careers?
If you are unsure where you see yourself in the future, why not enrol onto an apprenticeship? Not only do you gain exposure to various industries, but you also achieve recognition for your hard work and dedication!
Thank you for your time Nadia, Best of luck with your 4th Apprenticeship!
