Designs, builds and maintains robotic systems. This includes creating robotic hardware, developing control software and implementing solutions for various applications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop conceptual designs and blueprints for robotic systems based on project requirements and specifications.

  • Build prototypes of robotic components or systems to evaluate their performance and functionality, and conducting rigorous testing to identify and resolve any issues.

  • Write software code to control the movements and behaviours of robots, including programming sensors, actuators, and other components to perform desired tasks autonomously or under human supervision.

  • Integrate hardware and software components into complete robotic systems, ensuring seamless communication and coordination between different parts.

  • Select and integrate sensors (e.g., cameras, lidar, ultrasonic sensors) to enable robots to perceive and interact with their environment effectively.

  • Design mechanical components and systems for robots, including manipulators, grippers, locomotion systems, and chassis, taking into account factors such as durability, weight, and power consumption.

  • Ensure that robotic systems comply with relevant safety standards and regulations, implementing safety features and protocols to minimise risks.

  • Optimise robotic systems for performance, efficiency, and reliability, through iterative design improvements and the implementation of advanced control algorithms.

  • Document design decisions, test results, and technical specifications, and preparing reports or presentations to communicate project progress and outcomes to stakeholders.

  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, software developers, and project managers, to deliver integrated robotic solutions that meet project objectives and timelines.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Understanding of mechanical principles and design, including knowledge of materials, kinematics, and dynamics to create robotic structures and components.

  • Proficiency in electrical systems, circuits, and electronics to design and integrate sensors, actuators, and control systems into robots.

  • Strong programming skills, especially in languages like C/C++, Python, or MATLAB, to develop software for robot control, perception, and decision-making.

  • In-depth understanding of robotics concepts, including kinematics, dynamics, motion planning, and control algorithms, to design and optimise robot behaviour.

  • Knowledge of various sensors (e.g., cameras, lidar, ultrasonic sensors) and their applications to enable robots to perceive and interact with their environment effectively.

  • Familiarity with control theory and techniques such as PID control, feedback control, and motion control to regulate and manage robot movements and behaviours.

  • Understanding of machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence techniques to enable robots to learn from data, adapt to changing environments, and make autonomous decisions.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to tackle complex challenges in robot design, development, and deployment.

  • Effective communication skills to work in multidisciplinary teams, collaborate with colleagues, and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to plan, organise, and manage projects effectively, including setting goals, allocating resources, and meeting deadlines.

  • Knowledge of safety standards and regulations applicable to robotics systems, ensuring that robots operate safely in various environments.

  • Willingness to stay updated with the latest advancements in robotics technology, techniques, and best practices through continuous learning and professional development.
