A Wireless Rigger in Telecommunications is responsible for building and maintaining communication towers, ensuring the safe installation of steel structures and wireless communication components. They perform general ground procedures related to installation, manage different antenna and transmission lines, choose suitable equipment for specific installations, and climb and work on poles, towers and ladders or other support structures.

Responsibilities

  • Construct new communication towers.

  • Conduct routine maintenance to ensure structural integrity.

  • Repair any damage or wear to the towers.

  • Install steel structures such as tower sections.

  • Safely mounting antennas, transmitters, receivers and other wireless communication equipment onto the towers.

  • Prepare the ground for tower installation.

  • Assist with equipment setup and logistics.

  • Handle and install antenna cables, transmission lines and other related components.

  • Ensure proper routing and connection of cables for optimal signal transmission.

  • Assess project requirements and select the right tools and equipment for the job.

  • Ensure that equipment meets safety standards and specifications.

  • Scaling communication towers, poles or other support structures using safety harnesses and equipment.

  • Perform installation, maintenance and repair tasks at heights, often exceeding 500 feet.

  • Ability to work at height

  • Proficiency in using tools and equipment relevant to tower construction, such as cranes, winches, rigging equipment and power tools.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints and schematics.

  • Knowledge of electrical wiring and basic circuitry for connecting communication equipment.

  • Expertise in climbing towers and structures using safety harnesses, ropes and climbing equipment.

  • Understanding of safety protocols and procedures to mitigate risks associated with working at heights.

  • Physical fitness and agility to perform tasks while climbing and working at elevated heights for extended periods.

  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues related to communication equipment and tower structures.

  • Aptitude for quickly assessing situations and making informed decisions to resolve problems efficiently.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with team members and communicate clearly with supervisors and clients.

  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and convey information concisely.

  • Keen attention to detail when performing installation, maintenance and inspection tasks to ensure precision and accuracy.

  • Thoroughness in identifying potential hazards and ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations.

  • Familiarity with various types of communication equipment, including antennas, transmitters, receivers, amplifiers and cables.

  • Understanding of telecommunications protocols and standards.

  • Safety and Access and the EUSR Initial Climber and Rescue

  • Emergency First Aid at Heights

Step 5: Depending on the specific roles and responsibilities, tower riggers may pursue specialised training in areas such as antenna installation, tower inspection, RF engineering or project management.

Step 8: With experience and demonstrated competence, tower riggers can advance to higher level positions, such as lead rigger, supervisor or manager.
