An important milestone in the career of engineers and technologists

Demonstrate your competence, commitment, skills and experience by becoming an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

Why become an Incorporated Engineer (IEng)?

Becoming an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) showcases your professional expertise and commitment to high standards in engineering. It signifies that your skills have been independently assessed, your qualifications verified, and that you are dedicated to continuous improvement through ongoing professional development.

Benefits of Becoming an Incorporated Engineer (IEng):

  • Use of the internationally recognised title "Incorporated Engineer"

  • Acknowledgment as a qualified professional in your engineering field

  • Better career prospects and increased earning potential

  • Greater influence and responsibility within your organisation

  • Access to a global network of professionals and industry leaders

  • International recognition of your competence and dedication to the profession

Who is it for?

The Incorporated Engineer (IEng) qualification is for professionals who have developed substantial technical expertise and are looking to formalise their skills and knowledge. It’s ideal for engineers who have a combination of practical experience and education, and who wish to be recognised as qualified leaders in their field. IEng is well-suited for those in technical, management, or project-based engineering roles who want to enhance their career opportunities and professional credibility.

Are you eligible?

To become an Incorporated Engineer, you need to demonstrate that you meet the necessary competence and commitment standards, based on a combination of technical knowledge, experience, and personal dedication to the profession. Your application will be assessed against these standards, and you will need to show evidence of:

  • Applying engineering principles effectively in practice

  • Taking responsibility in your role, with leadership or management skills

  • Commitment to ongoing professional development (CPD)

  • Adherence to professional ethics, safety standards, and environmental responsibility

  • Complying with codes of conduct, codes of practice and the legal and regulatory framework

How can I apply?

You will need to familiarise yourself with UKSPEC (for the IEng Standard) and demonstrate both competence and knowledge to the required standard to become registered.

You will need to present evidence to demonstrate your level of competence in both an application form and a face-to-face interview.

To do this, you must be able to show:

  • how you have used your technical and/or engineering knowledge and understanding to apply technology to an aspect of your work

  • how you have applied theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission or recycle a technical/engineering process, system, service or product

  • where you exercised your technical and commercial management skills

  • your personal commitment to professional standards and recognition to obligations to society, the profession and the environment.

There are different ways in which you may demonstrate the knowledge and understanding to underpin the competences for IEng registration:

  • An accredited Bachelors degree in engineering or technology

  • A Higher National qualification e.g. HND, or Foundation degree in engineering or technology, plus further learning to Bachelors level

  • A Higher National qualification started prior to September 1999, e.g. HND or HNC (subject to it meeting certain criteria)

  • Other formal qualifications, e.g. those gained overseas, assessed as equivalent in the context of your overall application

  • Work-based learning, assessed in the context of your overall application

  • A combination of the above.

How do I find out if my qualification is accredited for IEng?

If you have the experience but lack formal qualifications, don’t worry—if your professional practice meets the required standards, you may still be eligible.

How much does professional registration cost?

You must be a member of the ITP before applying for Professional Registration. See here for membership levels and fees.

Application Fee: £250.00 + £65 Admin Fee

Engineering council entrance fee: £52.52

To maintain your professional accreditation status, an annual membership fee must be paid to the Engineering Council, along with ongoing ITP membership.
