Legal Counsels within the Telecommunications industry provide legal advice and guidance on telecommunications regulations, compliance issues and contractual matters. They review contracts, agreements, and regulatory filings to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Responsibilities
Analyse and interpret telecommunications regulations, laws and policies set by regulatory bodies.
Assess the company's compliance with telecommunications regulations, identifying areas of non-compliance and developing strategies to address them.
Review and oversee the preparation of regulatory filings, submissions and reports required for compliance with regulatory requirements.
Review, draft and negotiate contracts, agreements and legal documents related to telecommunications operations. This includes contracts with vendors, suppliers, partners, and customers.
Ensure that contracts and agreements comply with applicable laws, regulations and industry standards and protect the company's interests.
Identify legal risks and liabilities associated with telecommunications operations, transactions and business activities.
Develop strategies to mitigate legal risks, protect the company from liability, and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
Represent the company in regulatory proceedings, hearings and consultations with regulatory bodies.
Advocate for the company's interests in regulatory matters, lobbying for favourable policies, regulations and decisions that align with the company's objectives.
Provide guidance on corporate governance matters, ensuring compliance with corporate laws, regulations and best practices.
Develop and implement compliance programmes, policies and procedures to ensure that the company operates in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements.
Manage legal disputes, litigation and regulatory investigations involving the company.
Develop strategies to minimise legal exposure and liabilities arising from litigation or regulatory enforcement actions.
Protect the company's intellectual property rights, including patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets.
Provide legal training and education to employees on regulatory compliance, contractual obligations and legal risks relevant to their roles.
Raise legal awareness within the organisation, ensuring that employees understand their legal responsibilities and obligations.
Skills & Knowledge
A solid understanding of telecommunications laws, regulations and policies.
Proficiency in contract law principles and practices. Familiarity with common contract terms and conditions specific to telecommunications agreements, such as service level agreements (SLAs).
Expertise in regulatory compliance. This includes interpreting regulatory requirements, conducting compliance assessments and developing strategies to address compliance risks effectively.
Strong analytical skills. Legal Counsel/Specialists must analyse complex legal documents, regulations and contractual agreements to provide accurate advice and recommendations.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in negotiation techniques and strategies. Legal Counsel/Specialists must advocate for the company's interests while maintaining professional relationships with counterparties during negotiations.
Strong problem-solving skills.
Exceptional attention to detail to ensure accuracy and completeness in legal documents, contracts and regulatory filings.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, act in the company's best interests and adhere to professional codes of conduct and legal ethics.
Able to effectively communicate legal requirements and implications to non-legal stakeholders and collaborate with colleagues from regulatory affairs, compliance, finance, operations and other departments.
