Network Engineer
Job Info
Network engineers are integral to the development and upkeep of both physical and virtual IT communication systems within organisations. This includes designing, configuring and maintaining networks to facilitate efficient data transmission and communication across various devices and platforms.
Responsibilities
Install, configure and test appropriate network components or devices securely to well-defined specifications whether physical or virtual.
Acquire and analyse network performance data to monitor network activity.
Optimise and maintain the performance of network systems or services in line with well-defined specifications whether physical or virtual.
Investigate and problem-solve to address technical performance issues in networks to return the network to successful operation and escalate as necessary.
Undertake upgrades to a network including physical or virtual systems.
Interpret written requirements and technical specifications in relation to delivery of network systems and services.
Communicate technical network requirements effectively and professionally with a range of stakeholders.
Ensure all network engineering activity complies with organisational policies, technical standards, Health and Safety legislation, data security requirements, professional ethics, privacy and confidentiality.
Skills & Knowledge
Understanding causes and consequences of network and IT infrastructure failures.
Familiarity with typical IT systems architecture, covering hardware, OS, server, virtualization, voice, cloud, and applications.
Knowledge of techniques for systems performance optimization.
Proficiency in diagnostic techniques and tools for gathering information on systems performance.
Understanding of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and their application in network engineering activities.
Awareness of SLAs' role in Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery.
Knowledge of ports, protocols, devices, applications, and services at OSI and/or TCP/IP layers.
Familiarity with routing and switching concepts and characteristics.
Understanding of network topologies, types, and technologies.
Knowledge of wireless technologies, configurations, and cloud concepts.
Awareness of different network maintenance types and current legislation's impact on the occupation.
Proficiency in troubleshooting methodologies for network and IT infrastructure.
Skilled in integrating a server into a network and identifying security threats.
Familiarity with tools for automating network tasks and change management approaches.
Ability to apply secure tools and techniques in network operation and testing.
Skilled in installing, configuring and maintaining secure networks.
Effective communication skills.
Proficiency in upgrading and testing system components, including backup processes.
Ability to monitor, identify and implement maintenance procedures.
Skilled in optimising systems performance according to specifications.
Ability to plan and prioritise.
