A Satellite Network Engineer specialises in designing, implementing and managing satellite communication networks, including the infrastructure and protocols used to transmit data between ground stations and satellites. This includes network design, system integration, capacity planning, security and performance optimisation. They work on both ground based and satellite based components of the communication network, ensuring seamless connectivity and efficient data transmission.

Responsibilities

  • Design satellite communication networks, including coverage areas and network topology.

  • Integrate satellite systems with ground based infrastructure for seamless connectivity.

  • Optimise communication links between ground stations and satellites.

  • Monitor network performance and security, troubleshooting issues as they arise.

  • Plan network capacity and redundancy to ensure resilience and scalability.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.

  • Document network configurations and operational procedures.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to coordinate network operations.

  • Identify areas for process improvement and implementing enhancements.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Proficiency in network design, implementation and management, including knowledge of network protocols, architectures and technologies.

  • Understanding of satellite communication principles, including link budget analysis, modulation techniques and error correction methods.

  • Ability to integrate satellite communication systems with ground based infrastructure, including antennas, modems, routers and switches.

  • Skills in network monitoring tools, performance analysis and troubleshooting to ensure optimal network performance and reliability.

  • Knowledge of network security principles and best practices to protect satellite communication networks from cyber threats and vulnerabilities.

  • Ability to forecast network capacity requirements, assess bandwidth utilisation and plan for future growth and expansion of the network infrastructure.

  • Understanding of disaster recovery planning, redundancy strategies and failover mechanisms to ensure network resilience and continuity of operations.

  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry standards governing satellite communication networks, including licensing, spectrum allocation and data privacy regulations.

  • Skills in documenting network configurations, operational procedures and incident reports to maintain accurate records and facilitate knowledge sharing.

  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities to diagnose and resolve network issues, optimise network performance and address operational challenges.
