The role of a Network Operations Centre (NOC) Engineer working in the Satellite Communications sector is to monitor and manage satellite communication networks, including ground stations and communication links to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Continuously monitor the performance and health of satellite communication networks, including satellite links, ground stations and network equipment, using monitoring tools and software.

  • Detect and analyse network faults, anomalies and performance degradation issues and troubleshoot problems to identify root causes and resolve issues in a timely manner.

  • Respond to network incidents, alarms and alerts and escalate critical issues to the appropriate person or teams for resolution.

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, software upgrades and configuration changes on network equipment.

  • Optimise network performance by adjusting configuration parameters, tuning RF parameters and implementing best practices to improve throughput, latency and reliability of satellite communication links.

  • Monitor network traffic patterns and usage trends and perform capacity planning to ensure that satellite communication networks can accommodate current and future traffic demands effectively.

  • Monitor network security events, analyse security logs and implement security measures to protect satellite communication networks from cyber threats.

  • Monitor and enforce quality of service parameters to ensure that service level agreements (SLAs) are met and customer expectations are fulfilled.

  • Maintain accurate records of network incidents, maintenance activities, configuration changes and performance metrics.

  • Respond to emergency situations, such as satellite link outages, severe weather events or natural disaster, and coordinate with cross-functional teams to restore service and minimise downtime.

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, automation and efficiency gains in NOC operations.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including network engineers, RF engineers, satellite operations staff and customer support teams.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Proficiency in using network monitoring tools and software to monitor the performance and health of satellite communication networks.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills to detect, analyse and resolve network faults, anomalies and performance degradation issues.

  • Ability to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.

  • Understanding of satellite communication systems.

  • Basic knowledge of radio frequency (RF) principles.

  • Familiarity with network equipment used in satellite communication networks.

  • Experience in incident management processes and procedures, including the ability to prioritise incidents, escalate critical issues and coordinate response efforts with cross-functional teams.

  • Understanding of network security principles and practices, including access controls, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and encryption protocols, to protect satellite communication networks from cyber threats.

  • Knowledge of quality of service parameters to meet service level agreements (SLAs) and customer expectations.

  • Strong documentation skills to maintain accurate records of network incidents, maintenance activities, configuration changes and performance metrics.

  • Effective problem-solving skills and analytical abilities to troubleshoot network issues, identify solutions and implement corrective actions in a timely manner.

  • Clear and effective communication skills to interact with internal teams, external vendors and customers, including the ability to convey technical information in a concise and understandable manner.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

  • Adaptability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, and flexibility to respond to changing priorities, emergencies and operational requirements in satellite communication networks.
