The role of a Communication Systems Engineer in the Satellite Sector is to design and optimise communication subsystems of satellites, including antennas, transponders and modems for data transmission.

Responsibilities

  • Design communication systems that incorporate satellite technology to meet specific project requirements and objectives. This includes defining system architecture, selecting appropriate satellite orbits, frequencies and modulation schemes.

  • Perform link budget analysis to determine the required parameters for communication links between satellites and ground stations.

  • Coordinate frequency allocation and management for satellite communication systems.

  • Design and optimise antenna systems for satellite communication terminals.

  • Design RF subsystems and components for satellite communication systems to meet performance requirements and specifications.

  • Select appropriate modulation and coding schemes for satellite communication links to achieve reliable and efficient data transmission.

  • Develop communication protocols and standards for satellite networks, including protocols for data transmission, network management and error correction.

  • Integrate communication subsystems into satellite payloads, ground stations and user terminals.

  • Conduct testing and validation of communication systems, including performance testing, interoperability testing and environmental testing.

  • Prepare technical documentation, including system specifications, design documents, test plans, and validation reports, to document system architecture, requirements and performance characteristics.

  • Identify potential risks and vulnerabilities in communication systems, such as signal interference, equipment failures or cybersecurity threats and develop mitigation strategies to address these risks.

  • Monitor industry trends and technological advancements in satellite communication systems and identify opportunities for innovation and improvement to enhance system performance and reliability.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of telecommunications principles, including modulation techniques, coding schemes, multiplexing and signal processing.

  • In-depth knowledge of satellite communication systems, including satellite orbits, link budget analysis, frequency coordination, and satellite communication protocols.

  • Proficiency in radio frequency (RF) engineering concepts, including RF system design, antenna theory, RF propagation and RF circuit design.

  • Familiarity with communication protocols commonly used in satellite communication systems.

  • Ability to design and architect communication systems.

  • Knowledge of antenna design principles and techniques.

  • Understanding of modulation and coding schemes used in satellite communication systems, including techniques for error correction, data compression and spectral efficiency optimisation.

  • Skills in network planning and optimisation.

  • Experience in system integration and testing methodologies.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve issues in communication systems.

  • Basic project management skills to plan, coordinate and execute communication system projects.

  • Understanding of regulatory requirements and standards governing satellite communication systems.

  • Ability to analyse complex technical problems, evaluate alternative solutions and make data-driven decisions to optimise communication system performance.
